Gecamines has become, since 23 December 2010, a commercial company, under Congolese law, incorporated with limited liability in accordance with its new statutes. Its headquarters is located in Lubumbashi in the Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its purpose is summed up in the following principal elements:
- Prospecting, exploration and exploitation of mineral deposits; Processing of mineral substances of these deposits and processing of products derived from this treatment
- Processing of mineral substances of these deposits and processing of products derived from this treatment
- Product marketing.
- The Company may also be interested by contributions, underwriting, merger, financial interest in any commercial, industrial, financial, securities or property, related to one of the above purposes.
- The Company may also be interested in development activities, particularly in the sectors of farming and agriculture in the interest of the Company and its surroundings and any other related activity.
The deposits mined by Gécamines Sarl spanned a concession ± 7.109 km² (for copper and associated metals) and ± 14,000 km² (coal, tin and his companions). The Company’s operations are organized in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo into three groups: the Southern Group, including the mining region around the city of Lubumbashi and the city Kipushi, the Centre Group, around town Likasi and cities Kambove and Kakanda and, . the West Group, around the town of Kolwezi and the city of Luena Gecamines has undertaken, since 2012, an ambitious program to revive the production and improved management of the company as a whole, which mainly aims to achieve, by 2015, the level of 100,000 tons of copper per year. In this perspective, the construction projects of new production units and modernization of existing ones are in progress with the introduction of modern mineral processing technologies.
